VIDEO INTERVIEW: A CONVERSATION WITH SEAN JONES

Listen in as Ken McCarthy asks Sean Jones how he skippered the organization through the rough seas of 2020-21, the specific challenges JEN faced and is still facing, and its urgent need for support from the jazz community.

Among other things, he held down the lead trumpet chair at the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and toured with Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter on trumpet for the Tribute to Miles Tour.

With additional support from members and enthusiasts like you, the Jazz Education Network will continue to meet this challenge and emerge even stronger than before. We will continue to build our jazz arts community. We will advance jazz education and support students, educators, artists, and the jazz community around the world with year-round programming, and once again, enjoy world-class live performances in-person at our annual conference.

a letter from jen president
sean jones

Dear Friend,

During our most challenging times, the arts serve as a guide for humanity to find inspiration, hope, and resilience to make way for brighter days ahead.  Needless to say, the past year has been unusually difficult for our community, filled with loss and uncertainty due to the impact of the pandemic. Like many organizations, Jazz Education Network (JEN) has been directly impacted, most notably with the cancellation of our in-person annual conference and the immediate halt of charitable sponsorships and anticipated earned revenue.

Initially, I was concerned that the current circumstances would limit our ability to maintain the critical support that we need to operate.  But then I thought, what better time to showcase our versatility, creativity, and ultimately, our resilience to overcome these challenges. For everyone involved, this has been an opportunity like no other. As we have done over the past 13 years, and continuing through this challenging time, JEN is fully committed to continuing to fulfill our mission and work for the global jazz arts community.

During  the past 12 months, our dynamic team took immediate action and pivoted to present new and inspiring monthly online webinars reaching 2,520 attendees with over 65,000 webinar views by students, educators and professional musicians. The team also executed the fully digital 2021 JEN Experience, “Beyond the Notes”, in lieu of our in-person annual conference. This event reached 4,000 members and participants like you.

Although we’ve made tremendous strides since the start of the pandemic,  we need your help as we move forward.

The Jazz Education Network has taken targeted action in response to COVID-19:

1) The Board increased giving to help meet organizational needs,

2) JEN significantly reduced operational expenses by 44.5%,

3) JEN is currently pursuing COVID-19 relief support in the form of federal resources, loans and grants, with some relief already received to date.

With additional support from generous members like you, the Jazz Education Network will continue to meet this challenge and emerge from the pandemic even stronger than ever.

We will continue to build our jazz arts community, advance jazz education and support students and educators around the world with year-round programming. Through this rebirth and  renaissance, you will again enjoy world-class live performances in-person at our annual conference.

Please donate today.

Thank you in advance for your consideration, and please stay well.

Best regards,

Sean Jones
Board President
