Presented

by

DR. KEVIN McDONALD

WEBINAR OVERVIEW

A research presentation from the
2023 JEN Conference, Orlando, FL

Proceeding from Ingrid Monson’s argument that jazz and the civil rights movement are linked through economics, symbolism, activism, and aesthetics, this paper substantiates connections between civil rights issues and Max Roach’s musical life by unpacking representations of self-determination throughout both his music and career.
