CHRISTOPHER GAGNE
A research presentation from the
2021 JENX Online Conference
Even as female enrollment within national collegiate jazz programs has trended upward over the past two decades, the performed repertoire of these programs has largely remained a nearly exclusive domain of male composers and arrangers. My research focuses on this divide and ways to approach resolving it going forward.
Active as a composer and trombonist, Chris Gagne maintains a busy performance schedule throughout the Northeast, specializing primarily in jazz and contemporary improvised music. His playing has been recorded on albums featuring artists such as David Liebman, George Benson, Bob Brookmeyer, Sean Jones, and George Garzone. As music program director at Springfield College, Dr. Gagne arranges for and directs the instrumental ensembles in addition to teaching a range of music history courses. Research interests include exploring the shaping influence of technology within modern music education and the correlative relationships that exist between music and culture. Chris Gagne joined the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Springfield College as an assistant professor of music in 2019. Chris Gagne received his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Jazz Studies from the University of Miami, Master in Music (MM) in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory of music, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance & Composition from the Berklee College of Music.
